Mental and Physical Fitness It’s not often spoken about; however, when carrying out the role of a BG, it’s not just physical fitness that is important when carrying out the role. Mental health is also essential. If you have lots going on in your personal life, it can sometimes affect your performance at work. Some can flick the switch and completely switch off their personal life and focus on the task at hand whereas others may let their personal life impede their work and the decisions they make which could in turn affect job security. Everyone is human, but if you are someone that does have a lot going on at home and it impedes your work, the skill is to recognise this and not to be afraid to reach out. Reaching out could be to a team/family member or via any other channel that may be available. The old saying, “A problem shared is a problem halved”, rings true here. Sometimes there is a stigma attached to asking for help, especially when working in an alpha male environment when all you may need is someone to bounce your thoughts off and to give a sanity check. Anyone in that position from the BBA network, please feel free to reach out. I’m not in any way a counsellor or a professional in mental health, but I would certainly be happy to get on the phone and chat if someone needs help.
