The video shows an altercation (April 23, 2024) while San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan gave an on-camera interview. A man on the phone is speaking loudly and becomes angry after being told he’s interrupting the interview. The pedestrian then threatens to slap Mahan’s security guard — a San Jose police officer who was dressed in a suit. The verbal altercation escalates and becomes physical when the security is punched in the head. A long tussle ensues. The mayor was not harmed, and the pedestrian was arrested. The Mayor's spokesperson said, “The actions of the officer last night were heroic and a testament to the deescalation training that makes our officers effective, compassionate, and stewards of community trust.” Would you concur with that assessment? Being one-up in a scenario like this is every protector's worst scenario. However, we review these incidents not for critique but to learn, and I'm sure there is plenty we can take away from this situation. Thoughts?
